I WAS rather amused by the letter in this publication last week from the Lib Dem prospective parliamentary candidate for Chippenham, who made a point of announcing how the local Lib Dems are on the up locally. This did make me chuckle to myself as all the opinion polls show that the Lib Dems are on around nine per cent nationally, about the same as the last general election where we saw a massive decline in support, in fact just a handful of MPs at Westminster.
Since 2014 the Lib Dems have been between six and nine per cent in opinion polls. Even Ukip are showing better support at around 12 per cent nationally. I really don’t think Chippenham is any different to anywhere else in the UK.
The Lib Dem leader Tim Farron, who seems to be in total denial over the recent EU in/out election, seems to be out of touch with public opinion, and clinging on to the EU.
Rather than accepting the referendum result, whatever view you have on the EU, and our membership of it, we must accept the result, and stop moaning and work together to get the best result in the negotiations with the EU for our departure.
The Lib Dems try to be all things to all men but the electorate now see through this and want leadership rather than just a protest party against whatever party is in power at Westminster.
Locally the Lib Dems are just as bad, just jumping on any bandwagon they can to gain a few votes here and there.
