I AM delighted to see that Wiltshire Council has created an extensive 20mph zone in the streets around Brickley Lane and Eastleigh Road.
I hope this is just the beginning, and 20mph will soon be the standard limit on residential streets in Devizes and other Wiltshire towns.
However, I agree with Mrs Rowlands (December 22) that the blue and white peninsulas painted on the streets may be artistic, but they have no role in calming the traffic.
This is done much more effectively by the parked cars, of which there are plenty, and which cost the council nothing to provide.
Mrs Rowlands points out the wastefulness of putting a 30mph sign at the beginning of a short cul-de-sac.
However, she will be pleased to know that the council has redressed the balance by saving itself a 30mph sign at the top of Jump Farm Road. The speed limit on this road has been raised to 40mph, the same as Windsor Drive, which it leads up to.
I always thought speed limits were meant to reflect the safe maximum speed for the road, and this one curves uphill, with parked cars on the bend which are hard to see around. I would have thought 30 was the absolute maximum, and there might be a case for including it, and the residential streets off it, in the 20mph zone.
Wiltshire has spent a lot of money in the last few years introducing speed limits, especially 50mph on country roads. It always seems to me that those who drive responsibly will match their speed to the road conditions, which often means going well below the speed limit, and those who don’t will speed if they want to. Enforcing the new limits must be next to impossible.
