Cabernet Sauvignon - to some the king of the red grape varieties with its ability to age and produce amazingly complex wines in its homeland of Bordeaux. But how does it fare outside this hallowed area?Very well in fact. It's true that few of the wines have the complexity of a great Bordeaux, but then not many are made to mature for 25 years.The wines chosen here are all great examples of how well this grape can perform in the New World of winemaking.Just try them and see.

• Vergelegen Mill Race Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon 2004, Stellenbosch, South Africa Originally owned by the Dutch East India Company, this beautiful and historic estate nestles below the Hottentots Holland Mountains near to the town of Somerset West. Winemaker Andre van Rensburg has produced a stunningly good Bordeaux blend that is bursting with rich ripe flavours of ripe cherry, plum and chocolate.Great wine.

• Palandri Cabernet Sauvignon 2002, Margaret River, Australia Winemaker Sid Siddons has produced this excellent Cabernet from western Australian cool climate fruit, vinified in the company's state of the art winery in Margaret River. The wine is complex with impressive notes of blackcurrant and tobacco with crisp yet wonderfully open fruit.

• Los Vascos Cabernet Sauvignon 2004, Colchagua Valley, Chile Domaines Barons de Rothschild-Lafite took over the Los Vascos estate in 1988 impressed by its location near to the ocean and its exceptional soil. With their extraordinary experience in making wine not only in Bordeaux but globally, their 580 hectare estate is producing very fine French influenced Cabernets and this one is no exception. Classic tobacco and blackcurrant abound in this wine and even a twist of tobacco creeps into the mix. Wine with pedigree that is a joy to drink.
