Sharp satire on the tabloids

PREVIEW: Silly Cow by Ben Elton,The Wharf Theatre, Devizes.

Written by Ben Elton for Dawn French, this slick satire revolves around Doris Wallis, a bold, bitchy, brassy, tabloid journalist, whose pen has a reputation for slaughtering celebrities en masse.

Ben Elton takes the audience on a bare knuckle, whirlwind guide on how to succeed, or not, in gutter journalism. Doris, played by Tina Duffin, is ambitious and has her teeth firmly sunk into a promising, grand, TV future.

Not about to step around or avoid any obstacles that stumble into her path, she is summoned to court by the actress she has slandered, with her vitriolic, tabloid remarks on the lady’s acting ability, and size of her thighs.

Returning from her ordeal, Doris and her camp are (so she thinks) smelling of roses. She strides on and up, unaware, until too late, of the weeds surfacing around her.

Victims return, the plot takes a diversion, and more than just her bondage equipment come out from the closet, as chaos ensues and the fun really starts.

Director David Thompson comments: “The play has got something different which really engages and entertains us.”

The play contains adult humour. Tickets available from Devizes Books on (01380) 725944.
