Botox and gatox in cabaret

THREE stalwart performers at Devizes' Wharf Theatre have been booked as the cabaret act at a national charity convention.

Lesley Scholes, Merrily Powell and Tina Duffin in their stage personae as the ageing vocal trio of Socket, Sprocket and Wrench will be delighting delegates at the conference at Keele University, near Birmingham, on July 7.

The three first worked together last year on Mrs Scholes' summer extravangaza, Faith, Hope and Charity, a comedy set in a charity shop, which was a huge hit.

Mrs Scholes, manager of the Shaw Trust charity shop in Devizes High Street, said: "My boss came along to see the show and absolutely loved it. He talked to the organisers of the conference and before we knew it, we were booked."

The three actresses had to work up a cabaret act and decided on a cod concert party of three ageing performers. Their repertoire includes selections from Gilbert and Sullivan and old music hall numbers.

They have already tried out their material at a wedding reception. Mrs Scholes said: "We were really nervous, but they just went mad for it."

The second try-out will be at the Wharf Theatre on Sunday June 22 at 3pm in an entertainment dubbed Tart and Art, which will not only include Socket, Sprocket and Wrench's act, but an exhibition by the Fun Art Group and an afternoon tea with plenty of gateaux.

"You might say, it's a mixture of Botox and Gatox," quipped Mrs Scholes.

Tickets for the Wharf are available, £5, from Devizes Books on (01380) 725944.
