HURRAH - the Watermill is back on form. After a couple of recent disappointments, this is a humdinger of a summer show - musical theatre at its best.

Tom Chambers is best known as winner of Strictly Come Dancing in 2008, and sizzles as Bobby Childs. He has a great singing voice too, but is more than matched by Caroline Sheen as his love interest Polly Baker, who is sensational. There’s real chemistry between them and they have some terrific numbers together.

That’s absolutely not to say that the rest of the cast aren’t also tremendous - they are, without exception. This is a very classy, professional production, with no weak link at all. The female chorus line, for want of a better description, is just great, funny and versatile as they swap instruments with insouciance. The male chorus line, too, is their equal in every respect, playing out an ongoing gag about the best shoot-outs in cinematic history with obvious enjoyment.

A great thing about this show is that everyone looks like they’re having a ball. And why wouldn’t they, with Gershwin’s wonderful music and songs, and stunning choreography from the award-winning Nathan M Wright, who certainly doesn’t let the limited space stand in the way of big numbers. The 14 cast members are often all up there at the same time, dancing and singing on that tiny stage, throwing themselves and their instruments around with scant regard for the proximity of the front row, and performing the sort of choreography you’d expect to see at the London Palladium.

The Watermill has always been at the forefront of musical theatre and has put on some wonderful shows over the years. This is up there with the best of them - see it if you can.

It runs until September 17.
