Marlborough Jazz Fest: Bob Hall Trio

Audiences clapped and sang along despite the rain Audiences clapped and sang along despite the rain

THERE was a change to the Bob Hall Trio line-up this year as jazz legend Top Topham took the guitar place that has, for the last few years, been occupied by Henry Ayrton.

But the result was just as good, with some of the group's now classic numbers mixed with a few songs from their new CD to keep the audience clapping and singing along.

And despite being the victims of a minimally-publicised slot change on Saturday due to another act missing its ferry, the gig's audience picked up as word spread that the trio was boogying the afternoon away in the skittle alley at The Bear.

They sang "I don't play boogie" but that was clearly not true as they gave ever-splendid renditions of the style, along with equally good blues and gospel numbers, with spectacular vocals from Hilary Blythe.

According to the title track of their new CD "What goes around comes back again".

Let's hope that's true and the trio will be playing at Marlborough again next year.
