LOCAL band Magic Animal was voted winner of this year's Battle of the Bands at the Corn Exchange on Friday night at the end of a superb evening's entertainment.
Much life and energy bubbled in the basement of the Corn Exchange on Friday night in this well organised and life-affirming event that just gets better every year.
Organised by local music promoters Sheer Music in collaboration with Devizes Festival, young bands from all over Wiltshire competed for the prize of a £200 voucher for Madcap Music in Westbury and the coveted trophy.
The finalists were Sailors with Ricketts from Lavington, Behind the Lines from Rowde, Diversion from Swindon, Conscious/Unconscious from All Cannings and Pewsey, 3rd Idea from Devizes and Magic Animal, also from Devizes.
All of the bands gave enjoyable performances and were given a great reception by the 170-strong mainly teenage audience.
But it was Magic Animal, an accomplished four-piece from Devizes with a tang of Bush and Pearl Jam and a fine vocalist who won the audience vote.
Headlining the night were the She Creatures, a professional girl band from Bristol, who delivered electro-beats, harmonic backing vocals and witty repartee, silver lycra jumpsuits, platforms and unfeasibly large blue hair, to the delight of all.
Keiran Moore of Sheer Music said: "It was a fantastic evening and so much better for being in the basement rather than the main hall.
"The atmosphere was electric and all the bands played brilliantly."
Alex and Anna North
