CLOSE to one million music lovers are expected to register for the chance to be part of Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Swindon when tickets will be available on Wednesday.
The event, Europe’s biggest free ticketed festival, will be held in Lydiard Park on May 9 and 10.
Registration for tickets will open next Wednesday, April 15, and to be in with the chance of attending, fans must register their details on the Radio 1 website.
This year, it is expected that more people than ever before will sign up to see the likes of N-Dubz and Snow Patrol performing in Wiltshire.
A spokesman for Radio 1 said: “Last year around half a million people applied for tickets and demand is expected to be very high again this year.
“Unfortunately not everyone who applies will be successful, but we will have 40,000 tickets to give away across the two days.
“Radio 1’s Big Weekend is held in a different location each year. We were in Maidstone last year, and Preston, Dundee and Sunderland before that.
“Each year we give preference to residents of the local area, with tickets allocated at random based on postcode.
“The majority of tickets this year will go to those in Swindon, Wiltshire and the surrounding areas.”
Radio 1 has warned music fans that the only way of getting tickets is to register online and not to attempt to buy tickets second-hand through other websites.
Ebay will also remove auctions for Big Weekend tickets.
The BBC uses complicated technology to make sure the distribution of tickets is fair, meaning that only one pair of tickets will be given to one household.
Last year a man in Scotland tried to cheat the system by using computer equipment he had created but he was found out and confronted by the BBC. The full line-up will be announced on Radio 1 as the event draws closer.
