PREVIEW: Orchestra of the Swan, Malmesbury Abbey

2:09pm Thursday 4th September 2008

Two orchestras - one professional and one community - will be speed dating during a night out in Malmesbury when the Orchestra of the Swan visits the town for a special concert.

The widely-renowned Orchestra of the Swan will be performing with the North-Wiltshire based Wessex Concert Orchestra on Saturday September 13 at 7.30pm in Malmesbury Abbey as part of The Pound's outreach programme.

The Pound, in Corsham, is the arts hub for North Wiltshire.

The two orchestras will perform Speed Dating for Two Orchestras, written by one of the UK's leading female composers Errollyn Wallen.

Winner of the 2005 BBC Radio 3 British Composer Awards, Errollyn's music is renowned for its originality and accessibility.

Orchestra of the Swan will begin this concert with the classical elegance of a Mozart Symphony and conclude with a performance of Scheherazade by Rimsky-Korsakov - a four movement Symphonic Suite famous for its colourful orchestration and links to the history of Imperial Russia.

"With its reputation for excellence in performance and innovative programming, combined with accessible presentation, Orchestra of the Swan has attracted national critical acclaim," said Nicholas Keyworth, artistic director of The Pound.
