Eating Out Reviews
The Hungerford Arms, Hungerford
The owners of the Hungerford Arms are celebrating their third anniversary at the pub with a new summer menu and a new chef.
The 17-century Inn, which has stunning views of Farleigh Castle and the Westwood Valley, is in the Good Pub Guide and the Good Ale Guide.
Owners Hamish, 54, and Emma Curwen-Reed, 35, have now been at the pub for three years and have employed a new chef, James Gray, 28, who has worked with Mr Curwen-Reed on a new spring and summer menu.
Starters range from £4.10 to £5 and include home made chicken livers and port pate and strips of chicken and king prawns tossed in garlic butter, fresh basil, olive oil and crushed pine nuts.
Fresh lemon sole in herb butter and rack of lamb on a bed of minted mash and red currant and tarragon sauce are two examples of the main dishes available, which start at £8.75.
Desserts, which are all home made and £4 each, include fruit Pavlova and chocolate brownies.
Bar food and a children's menu are also available or children can have half sized portions from the main menu for half the price.
Mr Curwen-Reed said: "One of the things we pride ourselves in is that all of our food is freshly prepared on site.
"We're not a restaurant we just serve very very good fresh food and give restaurant service. We are 50 per cent food and 50 per cent drink whereas before we came it was more like 80 per cent drink and 20 per cent food.
"We offer striking views across Westwood Valley, have an open terrace and sell an enormous amount of local ales. We are simply a good 17th century pub with no pretence."
