Copa, Cheltenham

IT HAD to be done. A while back, a friend and I spotted a dish we’d never heard of before on a restaurant menu and since then we’ve been intrigued.

So a theatre trip to Cheltenham the other night provided the ideal opportunity to drop into Copa for a spot of pre-theatre supper and try the roast beef Yorkshire pudding wrap. Yep, you heard - roast beef wrapped in Yorkshire pud.

Copa, in Regent Street, is only a hop, skip and a jump from The Everyman theatre and it offers a wide menu of reasonably priced dishes, so is ideal for a quick bite before a show.

Having nabbed a table outside in the evening sun, my friend Steph ordered the wrap (£6.95) and I went for the charcuterie deli board (£7.95), a combo of ham, salami, chorizo, houmous, coleslaw, olives and bread.

The long-awaited wrap was a winner. Tasty beef, wrapped in Yorkshire pudding and served with chips, gravy and horseradish. True comfort food, it was a roast dinner you could eat with your fingers.

The deli board was generous in size, the meat tasty, excellent homemade houmous and great big chunks of granary bread. Filling and tasty, it hit the spot.

The menu included light bites such as potato wedges and nachos, ranging from £3.45 to £4.25, salads for around £7, jacket potatoes for less than £6, wraps and sandwiches costing about £5, burgers and main courses including steak, Irish mussels, pastas and curries ranging in price from £6.95 to £11.95.

The service was swift and efficient, the food tasty and nicely presented and it was good value for money. Open throughout the day for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Copa is good for a quick bite or for whiling away the evening, especially when it’s warm enough to dine al fresco and watch the world go by.
