THE great voyagers of the human race have, I am sure, set out with a dollop of trepidation when setting out to pastures new.

I, not at all great and definitely not a voyager other than looking for deals at ASDA, had that same sense of foreboding when heading away from my beloved Bradford on Avon to the unfamiliar surroundings of Bath.

I like seafood. Scratch that, I jolly well love the stuff. So me and my former work pal headed for fish restaurant Loch Fyne.

The converted bank has a very grand feel to it with its marble decor, high ceilings and ornate interior – all of which made me feel that my worn down puma shoes were not fitting of the splendid setting.

After a lengthy selection process, this place was chosen due to its three course set menu meal for £18 – oh, and the fact that everyone I know who has been there speaks highly of the food there. We could have chosen from the sizeable a la carte menu but too much choice for me means an hour or so of choosing and nobody wins there.

For the starter, I went for the Loch Fyne fish soup of saffron aioli, gruyere cheese and granary bread and my chum chose the interesting choice of Haggis and Cheddar Spring Rolls with mustard mayonnaise, pear and watercress salad.

With the air of a connoisseur, we thoughtfully and elegantly took our time, taking in the pleasant concoction of flavours with great satisfaction, much to the amusement of our very bubbly and helpful waiter. Stupidly however, I stuffed myself with bread and olives. This fatal and myopic decision was sending me on the path of a food coma, especially if I went for the full three courses.

Next up was the King Prawn spaghetti with roasted chilli oil, lemon and garlic, which we both chose. I am a humongous light weight when it comes to chilli.

This to any normal person was very mild but to me, I felt very much like a kettle just about to boil. I just about survived the dish but we both could eat no more – pitiful.

For four courses, at £28, and two soft drinks, apple juice and lemonade, £32.10 overall is very good or should I say it was just Fyne...
