We enjoyed a hearty meal at the 18th-century Dumb Post Inn in Bremhill, which is tucked away down the country lanes and is a well-kept secret.

The inn was once part of the Bowood Estate of the Earl of Shelburne and it still retains an old-fashioned charm, with two open fires to make sure customers are kept warm.

We chose our drinks and settled ourselves at a window seat next to one of the fires. My husband had a Fosters shandy at £3.30 and I had a medium glass of wine at £4.10.

The menu had plenty of good options, for starters, mains and deserts. I didn’t have a starter, but he went for soup of the day, made with butternut squash, coconut, red lentil and potato, which cost £4.95.

The soup came with white bread, butter and green leaves on top. Apparently the coconut made it slightly sweeter than normal, but it was very tasty and had a nice thick texture.

For the main course I went for a Ploughman’s at £7.95 and my husband went for the chicken and mushroom pie at £9.50.

The pie came deconstructed, with the puff pastry laid on top and the chicken, mushroom and sauce underneath. The Ploughman’s came with two types of chutneys, bread, butter, ham, brie, stilton and a smoked cheese.

We also ordered a side of handmade chips, £3.50, but our portions were so large we could only manage half the bowl.

I enjoyed the generous portions of cheese and ham, as well as the chutneys, a red onion chutney and a raisin and tomato chutney, which complemented each other well.

My husband thought the deconstructed pie was a novel idea and said the sauce was delicious, the chicken was well-cooked and there was plenty of it.

For desert I had the chocolate brownie with ice-cream at £4.95. This was crisp on the outside and gooey on the inside, just like a well-made brownie should be.

We visited late on a Tuesday night when the inn was quiet and I think we were the only people eating a full meal, but the barman was attentive and polite. He said the inn becomes popular during the summer, when people come to enjoy the countryside views and eat out on the wooden terrace.
