Feeling hunger pains coming on after watching the exploits of Emmet, Lord Business and the other Master Builders in the crazy world of breakneck-paced and brightly-coloured animation that is The Lego Movie, we sought grounding back in the real world and hearty sustenance at The Pheasant.

The Wadworth pub had changed beyond all recognition since my last visit quite a number of years ago during a works Christmas party.

The whole feel of the interior was much more spacious and airy than I remembered, with a distinctly contemporary feel.

The cosiness of the bar, which was filled with sports fans watching the rugby, gave way to a large dining area which was already peppered with customers, despite it only being 5pm.

We were quickly seated, despite a number of tables being reserved.

We were keen to try the carvery, which seemed a reasonable option at £6.95 a head (£7.95 on Sundays) and offered a choice of beef, gammon, pork, lamb and turkey.

There was no specific children’s menu but smaller portions of some of the main dishes are offered.

Our two opted for Walter Rose of Devizes’ pork sausages and mash, with peas and onion gravy, and ham, egg and chips (£4.75 each).

I was disappointed to find that gammon wasn’t on offer at the carvery that day and had mistakenly assumed that all the listed meats would be available.

The turkey I chose, however, was extremely tender and came with a huge variety of side dishes, including roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, cheese and vegetable pie and all the other trimmings you would expect of a traditional British roast dinner, plus a choice of gravy and sauces to accompany every meat.

My partner plumped for the beef and found it equally commendable, but felt the roasties and Yorkshire puddings had lived under the heaters a little too long and could do with being replaced with fresh ones.

The other meals were of a very high standard, the onion gravy which came with the sausages was very tasty and the chips cooked to perfection.

The bill came to just over £32 with four soft drinks.

It was well worth a flying visit.
