Children take part in traditional folk dancing to kick off the Chippenham Folk Festival

Not even the cool sun-showers could stop the children from performing their dances at the Children's Festival at Monkton Park today.

Parents and teachers cheered 300 children from Stanton St Quintin, Frogwell, Lacock, Monkton Park, Ivy Lane and Kings Lodge primary schools as the put dancing skills to the test.

Children demonstrated what they had learnt earlier in the day at workshops around the town.

Downfields band, of Stroud kept the crowds lively performing a range of different folk music to back May pole dancing, Garland dancing and sword dancing, performed by the children.

School helper Sally Bone, 43 was one of ten parents and school helpers who took 58 children from King's Lodge to the festival.

She said: "The day has been fantastic, the children have had a picnic and they have really enjoyed it. We have all really enjoyed the day out and would like to come back next year."

The Children's Festival kicked off this weekend's Chippenham Folk festival which runs today until Monday.
