Wootton Bassett Christmas Lights

By Joe Ware »

Wootton Bassett will be holding a traditional Christmas celebration this year including Santa and two of his reindeer.

On December 5 the shops in Wootton Bassett town centre will be staying open till 9pm and there will be a host of attractions for people of all ages to enjoy.

Melanie Nicholls from Wootton Bassett Town Council said there would be plenty of Christmas spirit. She said: “This year we are going to be having a traditional theme for our Christmas Lights event in Wootton Bassett.

“Santa will arrive on his sleigh pulled by real reindeer.

“There will also be a lantern parade as well as Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson on penny farthings.

“Victorian carol singers will be performing traditional Christmas carols.”

She added that everyone is encouraged to take part in the lantern parade.

She said: “Materials are available for those who would like to make a lantern for the parade beforehand or you can go along to a workshop on the night.”

The prestigious switching on of the Christmas lights will be done by the winner of the Town Council’s colouring competition. Mrs Nicholls said there would also be a special bonus prize for the winner.

She said: “The Town Council is running a colouring competition and the winner will have the honour of switching on the Christmas tree lights.

“The competition is open to children aged between five and 12 years and entry forms are available from the Wootton Bassett Town Council offices at 117 High Street.”

With the shops staying open late and lots of extra stalls selling a variety of Christmas products it is the perfect opportunity to get a head start on the Christmas shopping.

If you would like a stall on the night, or any information about the event, call the Wootton Bassett Town Council office on (01793) 850222.
