Calne Christmas Lights

By Alana Lewis »

THE dream of a white Christmas in Calne will become a reality this year with snow and an ice rink accompanying the light switch on and lantern parade on November 29.

The town hall will be transformed into a winter wonderland with a synthetic ice rink in the car park and two machines pumping out artificial snow.

The rink will accommodate even the most novice skaters with an ice scooter to assist learners. A disabled skate chair will also be available.

Festive music will set the mood for shoppers browsing the gift and craft stalls inside the town hall.

The spectacular annual lantern parade will light up the streets before the Christmas lights are switched on. The parade, organised by Calne Area Initiative For An Active Community, will leave Bremhill Social Club at 6pm and proceed through the town.

Santa will be joined on his sleigh leading the procession by the lucky winner of a school competition.

The magical feel will continue when 50 floating lanterns, a gift from Will Scaife of System Signs, are released into the night sky.

St Margaret’s School choir will entertain the crowds with carol-singing throughout the evening and community craft and food stalls will line the streets.

Town development officer Lorna Jordan said: “It is a really big thing for Calne to have an ice rink and it will give the opportunity for families to enjoy an activity within their own community and not have to travel to larger towns.

“The lantern parade is always spectacular and Jill Martin has been working hard to make sure this year is no different.”

Father Christmas and his elves will make a special appearance at the Bank House on December 13. Children can have their photograph taken with Santa and pick up a goody bag between 10am and 2pm. Charity Christmas cards will also be on sale.
