FORMER Devizes mayor Wilfred Greenaway died at the age of 90 at the Great Western Hospital on March 8.

Mr Greenaway was the third Labour mayor, serving from 1963 to 1964. During his term of office Devizes was twinned with the French town of Mayenne.

While a councillor, he fought for the creation of a Saturday market in The Shambles which has been a great success.

He was born in Devizes and was educated at St Peter's School.

During the Second World War he served in the Duke of Wellington Regiment in France, with the Sherwood Foresters regiment in Norway, in Northern Ireland and Scotland, where he was a member of the band and drums. He was later transferred to the Green Howards and attained the rank of Company Sergeant Major.

He was married in 1940 to Phyllis who died in 1974, aged 53. Mr and Mrs Greenaway lived in Waylands, Devizes, for 15 years. Together with neighbours Don and Jean Taylor, the couple organised social events for neighbours, including street carnivals, seaside trips and numerous floats for Devizes Carnival.

Mr Greenaway worked for 22 years for Bath Tramways Bus Company, first as a conductor and then as a driver.

He became secretary of the depot social club where his responsibilities included catering and organising outings, dances, and children's Christmas parties.

Later Mr and Mrs Greenaway moved to Potterne where they ran the Spar shop for many years.

On retirement he moved to Rowde but returned to Devizes about eight years ago, first to live at Stanford Court sheltered housing and then the new Crammer Court.

He leaves two children, Peter and Pauline. A second son, Dennis, died in 2005.

His funeral was held on Monday at St Mary's Church, Potterne.
