Farmer's wife Gaynor Butler was very much involved in village life

FARMER'S wife Gaynor Butler, who became a stalwart of the community in Wootton Rivers, has died in Combe End Court, Marlborough, after a long illness.

Daphne Gaynor Butler was born on November 14, 1919 at Sharcott, near Pewsey. She grew up at Manor Farm, Pewsey, one of nine children. She was educated at Malvern Girls School.

In 1939 she married Dick Butler who farmed at East Wick Farm, Wootton Rivers, and she lived in the village for almost 70 years.

She and her husband had two daughters, Elizabeth and Barbara, and a son, Richard, as well as nine grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

She was actively involved in the day-to-day running of the farm, and also a supporter of village activities.

She served as secretary to the parochial church council of St Andrew's Church for over 25 years and was, with her husband, one of the principal fundraisers for building the village hall.

She was also a keen member of the Women's Institute and became county chairman from 1971 to 1974.

She also held county office for Age Concern and was an organiser and volunteer driver for Link transport.

Mrs Butler's love of sport began with hockey and she played both for the county and for the South of England .

Later she became ladies captain at Marlborough Golf Club in 1983 and at Tidworth Golf Club in 1990.

A thanksgiving service for her life will be held at St John the Baptist Church, Pewsey, at 2.30pm next Tuesday, March 18.
