THE best part about being a reporter for the Gazette and Herald is speaking to so many different people in Wiltshire and sharing their stories with the community.

For 200 years we have been reporting the inspirational work of our readers and success stories, as well as births, deaths and tragedies.

While reporters may have come and gone and technology has evolved, one thing we will never be without is a notepad and pen ready to take down notes or quotes.

We are always busy, as no day is ever the same. One day we could be interviewing Syrian refugees who have fled to Wiltshire to escape the conflict, and the next we could be tweeting on our mobiles from the scene of a fatal fire or crash.

Finding news stories requires always having our ear to the ground and building relationships with people who we can call as our first point of contact.

We arrange weekly meetings with police officers in our towns to find out what crime has been happening, while parish and town councillors, social media and Wiltshire Council are also good sources of information.

Most importantly we rely on our readers getting in touch and sharing news or tipping us off about things we can investigate.

We are always at events such as the switching on of Christmas lights, the Marlborough International Jazz Festival and Concert at the Kings in All Cannings.

Once we find things to write about and interviewees to speak to, we bring stories to life from our notepad to the articles you read on our website and newspaper.

Every day we can write anything between three to six stories and our working hours can be irregular if we are going to council meetings, reporting breaking news or if we are working to a deadline.

Each town has a dedicated reporter and we have three editions of the Gazette: the Marlborough and Pewsey edition, Devizes edition and the Chippenham, Calne, Corsham, Royal Wootton Bassett and Malmesbury edition.

The beginning of the week is usually the busiest for us, catching up with what has happened over the weekend and making sure everything is ready before the paper goes to print on Wednesday.

As our office is based in Trowbridge we work alongside reporters from our sister paper, the Wiltshire Times, and also share stories with our other titles, the Swindon Advertiser and Salisbury Journal, so we have the whole of Wiltshire covered.
