Jones shocked by record-breaking Combe opener
Motorsport: Andy Jones believes the bar has been raised this year after the opening races at Castle Combe.
The Combe driver and resident finished fourth in the first Golden Helmet race and fifth in the class A Melton Concrete Products Formula Ford 1600 Championship as the circuit opened its 2008 season on Easter Monday.
He said: "The lap record fell so many times and it is going to be much more competitive. I qualified with a one minute 12 second which would have usually put me in the top five, but I was ninth."
Highlight of the first race meet was the first running of the Golden Helmet race, won by Bradford-on-Avon's Ed Moore.
Run to test the top Formula Ford 1600 pilots from all over the UK, a qualification race was run earlier in the afternoon, in which Moore failed to finish after problems with his Van Diemen RF0.
With the leaders holding each other up Moore closed in from his starting position at the back of the grid.
The reigning local champion took a brilliant victory, with Felix Fisher 2nd and Stuart Gough third. Castle Combe's Andy Jones took fourth.
Josh and Felix Fisher had earlier shown their skills in the opening round of the Melton Concrete Products Formula Ford 1600 Championship race.
Josh Fisher cruised to a dominant victory in the Melton Concrete Products Formula Ford 1600 Championship.
Moore was second with Chippenham's Adam Higgins third.
There was a change to the running of the National Mobile Windscreens Saloon Car Championship, with the faster class A four wheel drive cars attached to the Special GT race.
This still left classes B, C and D and Bristol driver Mark Wyatt finished ahead of Tim Maddocks.
Chippenham's William Di Claudio took pole, fastest lap and victory in class D in his Peugeot 106 with Yatton Keynell's Jason Cooper an impressive second debut in his Fiesta.
The class A cars were amalgamated with them for the first time and provided a cracking race.
Melksham's Simon Norris came second from Gary Prebble, with Barry Squibb crossing the finish line in third.
