Marlborough charity workers set to horse around
Rescued race horses at Greatwood will have the last laugh when members of staff from the Clench Common rescue centre race around Badminton in what is being billed as a “people chase”. Some of the horses that Greatwood takes in at the end of their racing careers are steeple chasers, so it is an irony that the people who help look after and re-train them so they can be rehomed will find out for themselves what it is like to tackle the jumps on a choice of five or nine mile races. It is the tenth anniversary of Greatwood relocating from Devon, where it was founded by Helen and Michael Yeadon, to continue its work of giving race horses new careers when their racing days are over. It costs £480,000 a year to run the centre which has 48 horses in residence at present. The racing team hopes to raise at least £1,000 at the Friends Day on Saturday which members of its Friends group can attend from 11am and the public from noon. read more
