Teen’s joy at success of first Calne extreme sports contest
The teenage organisers of Calne’s King of the Bowl said the inaugural event on the weekend would give them a springboard for the future. Youngsters were cheered on at the skate bowl, in Station Road, on Saturday, as the first ever competition of its kind took place. King of the Bowl was the idea of Ellis Welch, a 16-year-old college student from Isis Street. He wanted to engage local youngsters by handing them a proper extreme sports competition. Although he only had around 20 people take part, Ellis, a music technology student at Wiltshire College, said the day was a success. He said: “The day went really well. We didn’t get quite as many entrants as we might have hoped for but the competition was good and lasted most of the day. “There were lots of people watching and cheering on the competitors and they responded to what the contestants were doing. “It was a good day and I would like to thank the town council, my friend Jacob Weaver and my family for their help in putting it together.” The competition was on the lookout for the best tricks in town and there were categories for under and over 13-year-olds. Skateboarder Pete Case was crowned King of the Bowl in the over-age category, while Jack Patey, on his scooter, was victorious in the under-13 category. Ellis said he hopes to use the day as a launch pad for his company Skate Scoot Wiltshire. He said: “Since the competition the interest in SSW has gone crazy, it has totally blown up. “The Facebook page has been great and loads of people have been asking for branded T-shirts. “I am hoping that, within the next three or four months I will be able to get a good clothing line going, with T-shirts and hats. It has really helped me get going. “Eventually I would love to have my own skate shop, with equipment and some of my own stuff in it.” read more
