    THE face of innocence can be seen in these regular soldiers, pictured in 1914 a few months before the outbreak of the First World War. The picture was found by David Hill, 89, who lived in the Devizes area for more than 40 years before moving to Trowbridge. He found the picture, which was taken by Bulford Barracks Studio, behind a photograph of a sphinx which belonged to his father. It would be the last photograph ever taken of many of the soldiers. read more

  • Ghosts of a lost village

    IMBER, the village seven miles from Devizes taken over by the Army in 1943 and never returned to its inhabitants, still rankles in the public mind after all this time. read more
