    The government axe has fallen again on Wiltshire. Local government minister John Healey claimed the new countywide authority could prove to be a flagship for the rest of the country to follow when on Wednesday last the government voted it through by 269-158. read more

    At the weekend I walked up Bulls Hill from Westmead playing fields in Chippenham and was shocked to find the kissing gate that was the entrance to this public path had been removed. read more

    Can any of your readers give me any information on the Calne Flitch Trials? My grandparents Ada and John (Jack) Truckle entered this competition and were awarded the flitch, presumably at the beginning of the last century. read more

    Age Concern Wiltshire would like to say a big thank you to everyone who supported the Devizes pancake races and Kennet Befriending Service pancake afternoon in Marlborough. Despite the strong winds, the races seemed to be great fun with pancakes flying all over the Market Place! read more

  • Club is far from becoming insolvent

    was appalled to read your article (January 31) "Dwindling legion in danger of closure". It would appear that the information that you printed, allegedly given to your reporter by some person from the club, should have been confirmed by a much more responsible officer of the club before publication. read more

  • Put some pressure on

    I was amazed to see that the signs warning of delays on London Road in Devizes have just been changed from a period of three weeks to four. Since the works started on January 2, they have already been in progress for five weeks and, unless completed by Wednesday, we are now in our seventh week of traffic chaos. read more

  • Foxes are predators

    In response to the letter by Geoffrey Treherne (Gazette, February 7), he is wrong about foxes. They are not vicious killers; they are predators who hunt for food. It is humans that are the most destructive and vicious killers on the planet, causing wars, environmental destruction and killing animals and birds en masse for profit. read more

  • Safe driver at 80

    My mother learned to drive in her 50s in order to regularly travel from Kent to Somerset to visit ailing parents. She is about to be 80 this year and is still driving, having just last year decided not to tackle the M25 any more when visiting my sister and I in Wiltshire. read more

  • Fond memories

    The recent obituary of Michael Cutforth in the Gazette mentioned his penchant for the deliberate solecism in his articles in the paper. One that caused many a smile was when Michael did a piece on a fundraising event at St John's Parish Rooms, where he reported that "More than a hundred cups of tea were cold." read more

    The latest self-congratulatory publication, called Step by Step, produced by the Primary Care Trust has appeared. In it, the claim that "98 per cent of Wiltshire residents have access to a Minor Injury Unit within 15 miles of their home" is made. What's the odd two per cent matter? read more
