Letters

  • Lost and found

May I thank the lady who found my purse in a shop in Phelps Parade, Calne, last Saturday. read more

  • Planning worries

As we enter a time of economic slowdown, especially in the building trade, I am writing to raise concern about what is going to happen to planning applications between April 1 2009, when the district councils cease to exist, and the middle of June, the earliest date that Wiltshire Council will have enough trained councillors to get their development control or planning committee up and running. read more

  • Complaint stinks

I would like to lend my support to the management of the Old Lane pub in Pewsham for their robust action to ensure standards of common decency in their restaurant. read more

  • Thanks to staff

Recently I had to spend nearly three weeks in the Royal United Hospital in Bath and I would like to say many thanks to all the doctors and nurses involved in my care. Everyone was very kind and supportive. I would also like to thank my family and friends, especially those from Chippenham Town Football Club and Chippenham Gateway Club, for all their love and support following my surgery. read more

  • Walk’s grand sum

Please may I thank all those kind friends, neighbours and family who so generously sponsored Jenny Batey and I on our Ian Botham Leukaemia Research Walk. I have forwarded a cheque for £1,000 to the research fund. We are extreamely grateful and thank you all again. read more

  • Where was dray?

I was very disappointed not to see the Wadworth dray on television at the Lord Mayor’s Show recently. read more

  • Bus stop essential

It has now been officially confirmed that the bus stop at Burnham House in Malmesbury will continue to be serviced and will be maintained. It is an essential bus stop for the elderly of Athelstan Road. read more

  • Classmate news

I write to thank you most sincerely for including my letter in your newspaper. read more

  • Profit not people

It has come to my notice that Lloyds Chemist in New Road in Chippenham is being closed at the end of the year. read more

  • Too far away

“Family records available at History Centre” the headlines say. That headline looks interesting but, while you can access the information by computer and order copies by snail mail, the History Centre (formerly the County Record Office in Trowbridge), is now sited in a most inaccessible place in Chippenham. That town is no more centrally sited in the county than Salisbury but council leader Jane Scott ordered its move to her own part of Wiltshire despite strong opposition. Yes, it is the same person who decided we should go unitary without districts and without asking electors first. read more

  • Hope not a crime

Sara Gray’s letter of November 13 is just another sad example of how far this country has departed from its Christian roots. In multi-cultural Britain other faiths are allowed to evangelise and proselytise with impunity, including the Religion of Evolution – which is, incidentally, still just an unproven theory – and woe betide anyone who questions them. Mention Jesus, however, and all hell breaks loose. Is this not an indication of the unseen forces behind such paranoia? Jesus said: “I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12). He also said: “Go into all the world and preach the Good News to the whole creation” (Mark 16:15). read more

  • Village links go against parish views

I must express my disappointment at the final recommendations of the Boundary Committee with regard to this parish. From the outset, the parish council has sought the views of constituents and then robustly presented the evidence to the Boundary Committee. read more

  • Contents are key

I am grateful to Sara Gray from Malmesbury for drawing attention to the Christmas Shoe Box Appeal. While parts of the letter highlighting the dangers of fundamentalism are to be commended, other aspects give concern. read more

  • Great shame our landlords are leaving

Your inaccurate news article ‘Landlords to quit village pub’ has incensed me to write to you to clarify certain points. read more

  • Not to be trusted

I was delighted to read that Prince Charles will be opening the Primary Care Centre at Malmesbury this week. It seems like only yesterday when staff at Savernake Hospital were speculating whether it would be the prince opening our brand new £9.5m hospital, of which we were all so proud. That was more than three years ago. In the summer of 2005, Carol Clark, the then chief executive of the Primary Care Trust, said: “I am delighted that, after 15 years of dedication and commitment to this scheme by the community, the local NHS is now able to provide a significant health care resource for the people of Marlborough and district.” read more

  • Town crier fun

It was good news to hear that we are to have a real town crier at last. This time I shall not be doing something that was traditional many years ago. The town crier at that time was Mr Knott who was the landlord of the Volunteer Arms public house on the Green. read more

  • 0mph is a joke

At noon on Friday, a line of six vehicles were northbound on the A345 within the approaches to Oare, all well within and observing the 30mph speed restriction. read more

  • Poignant parade

I would like to congratulate your Marlborough newsman Nigel Kerton for his part in organising the recent Remembrance parade. This is the second year that the bell from HMS Marlborough has been mounted at the Cenotaph in the town. read more

  • Poppy generosity

On behalf of the Marlborough branch of the Royal British Legion, may I thank the people of Marlborough and the local area for their outstanding generosity during this year’s Poppy Appeal. Although the total amount collected has still to be finalised, the very enthusiastic support shown not just for the appeal but also for the legion itself has been extremely welcome and most gratefully received. read more

  • Cash for hounds

On behalf of Greyhound Rescue West of England, I would like to thank the collectors and all those who donated and stopped and chatted with us at the street collection in Chippenham on Saturday. read more
