Letters

  • No new hospital

During the Pathways for Change consultation, Kennet, North Wiltshire and West Wiltshire Primary Care Trust stated that up to 25 beds were being considered for Melksham and possibly a new community hospital. read more

  • More drivers needed

I WOULD like to make an appeal on behalf of Chippenham Link Transport. read more

  • Thanks to A&E staff

Could I thank the wonderful work the police, ambulance and the fire brigade did for my dad, who had an accident in Ladyfield Road, Chippenham on January 6. Dad had to be cut out of his car and he was taken to the RUH in Bath. read more

  • Out in all weathers

With all the unpleasantness in the news recently regarding the younger generation, it was refreshing to see last Sunday morning on Marlborough Common, at least 100 young people, ranging in age from about five years to teenagers, learning how to play rugby. read more

  • Fly flag in reverence

I was interested to read about the controversy about plans to fly Union Jack (Union Flag) from Calne Town Hall. read more

  • Hacks do fade away

January is not yet over and Peter Simmonds has already twice failed to keep his pen locked in his desk, and succumbed to what is clearly for him an overwhelming temptation to jot a quick one to the Gazette. read more

  • People don't want a new sports hub

There should be an open public debate with all the members of the Wootton Bassett Sports Association and all the residents of Wootton Bassett so the trustees can answer the questions that need to be answered on the new sports hub. read more

  • Plan has no benefits

The forthcoming appeal by ASDA to again ignore Chippenham residents' wishes and locate a superstore at the Westinghouse site defies belief. read more

  • Bumper collection

May I, on behalf of the Royal British Legion, thank the people of Devizes and surrounding villages for their generosity at Remembrance time. read more

  • Comfort at sad time

I wish to say thank you to our emergency services. On Sunday January 20, my 87-year-old mother died suddenly at her home. The police, paramedics and all who attended showed wonderful compassion in a time of great stress, helping to reassure and comfort us whilst, at the same time, carrying out their duties with complete professionalism. At a very sad and difficult time, their expertise and kindness was greatly appreciated. read more

  • Praise for the GWH

The reason for this letter is to let people know of the wonderful, efficient service provided by the staff of Swindon's Great Western Hospital. read more

  • Elm Tree is a gem

I read with interest the restaurant review in last week's paper. It would appear that Joanne Moore has missed out if she is unaware that for the last couple of years Devizes has been blessed with one of the best Chinese restaurants in the county. I refer of course to the Elm Tree pub in the High Street. I have been going there since it opened and have always had superb food with smiling service. read more

  • Housing mystery

Following from the picture in Your Memories of January 10 of cutting the first sod to create the former Marlborough open air pool, I have a small commemorative spade inscribed: Presented to Edward J. Tuck, chairman of the RDC Wootton Bassett on the occasion of cutting the first sod of the housing scheme, December 1919'. read more

  • Ban affects trade

I was interested to read your article about Wadworth's on January 10, particularly as you make no reference to the possible damage done to trade since the smoking ban was introduced last July 1. read more

  • Tribute to ex-staff

In two successive weeks you have printed two death notices of people intimately associated with the Gazette of half a century ago and we, who were their colleagues, would wish to pay our tribute to their memories. read more

  • Appointments system does not work

I was interested to read the letter from Councillor Ray Parsons about the missed appointments at the doctors' surgeries in Devizes. read more
