Letters

  • Break in security

ON January 12 I was shopping in Sainsbury's Calne store. A group of boys about 14 years old, walked past several members of staff with glass bottles of Coke and opened them with bottle openers being sold in the store. As they walked out they lifted the bottles and shouted "cheers". read more

  • Is anyone listening?

Michael Ancram hit the nail on the head when he said 2007 was the year in which no one listened. read more

  • Service is appalling

I currently pay £700 a month to commute from Chippenham to Paddington. I have been using this service for three years, and from bad, it is now appalling. read more

  • Stop waging war

I see from your letters (January 3) that Peter Simmonds is still venting his spleen in the press, unable to accept that the majority of the members of North Wiltshire Conservatives wish to get on with the job of building a healthy, happy association in support of our MP. read more

  • Dislike these attacks

Dislike these attacks I was infuriated by the letters from Sarah E Aston and Peter Simmonds recently. read more

We would like to thank all management and staff in both Sainsbury's and Morrisons for allowing and inviting the Brownies and Guides to do bag packing during the Christmas week. They were very friendly and accommodating. Also heartfelt thanks to customers in both stores who donated so generously to our fund. In the two days, we raised just under £1,500, which is truly amazing. read more

  • Check your facts

Why do people write in before checking the facts? I have been assured by the town hall in some detail that Quakers Walk and Windsor Drive in Devizes will not be developed. read more

  • Hunt battle not over

Driving through Poulshot on the afternoon of January 5, I was alarmed to see vehicles blocking the road and what was clearly the activity of a local hunt underway. The large pack of hounds were crossing the road and onto a fox. Leaving the main throng behind we saw the poor bedraggled fox they were pursuing, and the huntsman directing the hounds towards the creature, just yards away. read more

  • We all suffer in end

May I bring to the attention of the public the number of appointments missed at Lansdowne Surgery and possibly the other two surgeries in Devizes. read more

  • Praise for the NHS

May I praise and thank our local health services. My 83-year-old mother was taken ill during the last weekend of 2007. We had to call the out of hours doctor's service on the Sunday morning and again on the Sunday evening. On both occasions she was treated by kind and patient doctors. It was decided that she needed to go into hospital and at 10.30pm on Sunday she went off in an ambulance, accompanied by two cheerful ambulance staff. read more

  • Traffic proposals will create confusion

After reading Nigel Kerton's article in last week's Gazette, Have say on way ahead', I was amused to read the next day in The Times an obituary of the Dutch traffic engineer Hans Monderman, who "stripped roads of signs, markings and traffic lights to create a shared space for cars and pedestrians". read more
