Letters

  • Oppose school plan

There have been some real improvements in Curzon Street, East, during the last ten years - not least the virtual eradication of pigeons - thanks in part to St Mary's and the efforts of Coun Ireland and Mr O'Dwyer. read more

  • Steep fine the answer

Councillor Sturgis wonders what amount of dog poo per square kilometre in a public park is acceptable before intervention (Gazette and Herald, March 22). read more

  • Why must Calne go?

The White Horse Leisure Centre in Calne is to close to the public in a couple of days. Of the six leisure centres threatened with closure, why Calne, a town of over 9,000 people, the second largest in Wiltshire? read more

  • Worst type of spin

Last week a copy of Improving North Wiltshire plopped through my letter box. read more

  • Time to move on

Now that Tangles has finally closed after 26 happy years in Marlborough, I should like to thank all my clients, especially those who stayed right to the very end. read more

  • School a hidden gem

I wonder if anyone looking for a school for their child knows anything about the hidden jewel we have in Wiltshire? read more

  • FA secretary may be in for a rough ride

I am writing in response to the report about Mel Gingell being sacked by the Wilts FA (March 22). I am formerly the manager of Wootton Bassett, Pewsey Vale, Weston St John's, Malmesbury Vics and have also been a referee on the Southern League and am a qualified coach. read more

  • Car wash a success

  • Stranger’s kind act

May I express my sincere thanks to the unknown lady who found my watch in the Castle & Ball car park and handed it in to reception. I will always remember her kindness. read more

  • Buy your own bikes

I was very surprised to read that the police had asked a local parish council to give £1,000 to provide a bicycle for local police. Why can't police officers provide their own bicycles? read more

  • Get the facts right

Chris West really must get his facts right, otherwise he could end up in the Monty Python team (letters, March 22). read more

  • Ideal place for music

I'm writing in response to your Letter of the Week last week. As a musician who has visited many arts centres around the country, I've always lamented the fact that Devizes has nothing to offer in the way of a multi-purpose arts facility, and to adapt the Wharf Theatre strikes me as a fantastic idea. read more

  • Fine amateur theatre

I consider the Letter of the Week, March 22, about the Wharf Theatre quite appalling. When we came to Devizes 14 years ago, I was delighted to find such a vigorous group of people running this delightful venue. read more

  • Houses affect prices

A little noticed result of Kennet's housing strategy has been the effect on house prices. read more

  • It’s wrong to compare councils to PCTs

Val Compton (letters, March 22) is right to seek answers to questions about the proposed single authority for Wiltshire, but I think she is wrong to draw a parallel with Primary Care Trusts. read more

  • Will cuts pay for fence?

I refer to the ITV local news bulletin of March 19 in which it was indicated that Devizes Hospital required an enclosure fence to protect its staff at an estimated cost of £30,000 to £40,000. read more
