Letters

  • Laughable council

Not only has the Liberal Democrat administration at North Wiltshire District Council reneged on its decision to bring forward the date for an increase in car parking charges to April 1, it has also hit the residents of Wootton Bassett with a double whammy. read more

  • Why bother to vote?

I write to protest at the jerrymandering policy of North Wiltshire District Council in respect of the hamlet of Hartham. read more

  • Controls are needed

I endorse the current campaign to improve the safety of Hardenhuish Lane by the installation of pedestrian crossings. I suggest that traffic calming is added as well. It is the case that many car drivers who use this road appear to be selfish and irresponsible and their behaviour will not change without highway control. read more

  • Rethink on graves

I am writing on behalf of my dad, aged 80, and four sisters and all our families. We are very upset with the situation regarding the removal of all items from our mother's grave in Curzon Street Cemetery in Calne. read more

  • We must ensure leisure centre is saved

There is still an opportunity to rescue our badly need leisure facility in Calne. read more

  • End thespian monopoly

For too many years now the Wharf Theatre in Devizes has stood as the dead heart of the Wharf complex, a potential public facility hijacked these past 25 years by a minority interest group. Those who have attended public events in the Wharf's environs over the years will have noticed the theatre lying still, dark and silent, its occupants choosing not to participate in whatever is taking place on their doorstep. read more

  • Breeds disappearing

As a regular listener to Radio 4 I have been dismayed to hear that many of the breeds of dog popular in my youth are now close to extinction. Working dogs, once familiar, are now fading into folk memory, yet I will never forget my boyhood, and Rex, my faithful English setter, and my grandfather's red brick pointer, once commonly owned by many in the construction industry. read more

  • Letter was inaccurate

St Mary's School Sports Centre would like to respond to the letter by Ms Ann James in last week's Gazette and correct the inaccurate comments made. read more

  • Daffodil success

I would like to thank the people of Devizes who gave so generously to the Marie Curie Daffodil Appeal on Thursday March 8. We collected £587.30. A big thank you also to our loyal band of collectors. read more

  • Planning gone mad?

I agree with the letter from M Meek, Views mean Nothing, (letters, March 8) regarding another supermarket in Marlborough or on the outskirts - no thought for the views of the local people. read more

  • No damage is done

I would like to thank the gentlemen who so kindly assisted us on March 17 at Devizes Fountain Festival when a sudden gust of wind sent our stall careering across the Market Place. read more

  • Thanks for tribute

Thank you very much for the lovely tribute your publication paid to my father, John Ovenden. read more

  • Wonderful people

I would like to thank the people who sent sympathy cards and letters following the sudden death of my father John Ovenden. read more

  • Go back to pencils

At first I thought that in the letter from Ray Taylor, (March 15), it was a case of the author having a laugh. read more

  • Well-paid powers that be still got it wrong

Over the last ten years I have worked in Marlborough for both the district and county council and for the NHS. Having received training on the functions of all councils and being an observer from the inside of the NHS, I find the unitary authority debate poses a good many questions. read more
