  • Industry in decline

    The news that turkey meat produced in Hungary by the largest British' turkey producer is possibly the carrier of avian flu back to their Suffolk farms is a sad reflection of the decline of the poultry industry in the UK. read more

  • Donation in memory

    On behalf of myself and my two sons Graham and Kevin, I would be grateful if you could print a great big thanks to the generous and kind people of Marlborough and Pewsey who donated to the memory of my wonderful wife Heather Dobie, who passed away on September 6. read more

  • Time for an election

    Reading the Gazette and Herald this week has left me feeling negative as to the future happiness for people living within the area covered by Wiltshire County Council, for the following reasons: a) The liquidation of Kennet District Council by a unitary authority, which is going to cost taxpayers more money in the early stages and loss of some jobs. Reason: under funding. b) Withdrawal of police presence on the streets by closure of police stations, the reduction of police officers. Reason: under funding. c) Health service cuts, closure of hospitals. The main problem is under funding. d) Schools making cuts to balance their budgets. Reason: under funding. e) Poor equipment support for our British servicemen and women, and denied their own military hospitals. read more

  • Pay tribute to fallen

    Edington Royal British Legion branch is planning a book on the men from the area who fought in both world wars and especially those who paid the ultimate sacrifice and never returned home. read more

  • Rubbish dumping is on the increase

    I should like to congratulate Kennet District Council on the way in which it has dealt with the introduction of wheelie bins and the changeover to the fortnightly collection of rubbish. read more

    As regards the confusion around the development around Manor Farmyard in Urchfont, I can remember a time when my partner and I could not resist having a peep at the baby ducklings which Jane Stone was trying to protect in the farmyard to put on the pond for the benefit of young and old. read more

  • Zero tolerance time

    I love my tiny waterside cottage and equally I love the environment in which it stands. I derive pleasure from keeping the road and river litter free, from planting flowers along the bank and even from strimming the grass to keep it looking cared for. Some cynical friends say I ought to get out more. read more
