WILTSHIRE SUNDAY CUP Following the embarrassment of their last outing when they lost 8-1 against the Ship, British Lion have spent the last two weeks licking their wounds and, like most beasts of their ilk, are dangerous when cornered. Written off by many, they recovered their dignity and drove one large stake through the heart of the Wiltshire Sunday Cup with a battling win at Green Lane against top Swindon side Penhill United. read more
DIVISION FOUR Corsham Centre B and Riverside Renegades share the number one spot in Division four, with the Centre on top by virtue of a slightly better goal difference. The Centre travelled to Steeple Ashton Rangers and already beaten them 5-0 earlier this season they were expecting a repeat performance but it wasn't to be as Nathan Holloway's side won a scrappy match 1-0 to inflict the Centre with their first loss of the season. Once the fog cleared from the Ashton pitch the game finally got underway and both teams never really reached top gear as the match was lacking continuity with most of the play being concentrated in the middle of the park with neither team playing much football. Steeple scored the only goal of the game midway through the first half when a long ball found under fire striker Jack Holdway who went through on goal, and took it a round the Centre's keeper James Whitehead before calmly slotting home. The second half was in keeping with the first, but the closest the Centre came to preserving their unbeaten record was when Ashley King's effort went just wide of the target following a goalmouth scramble, but other than that the Centre never really mounted a serious challenge to Ashton's defence who were there when they were needed. read more
DIVISION THREE The heavyweight battle in Division Three between leaders Biddestone White Horse and AFC Bell was tipped to be a thriller and it didn't fail to disappoint, as on the eve of Fireworks day both teams were in sparkling form in front of goal and it was Biddestone who took the spoils and a deserved win as they overturned a 4-1 half time deficit to run out 6-5 victors. With the touch paper lit, those lucky enough to witness the game couldn't believe their eyes as goals from Gary Campbell and Jonathan Couch put Bell two nil up. Scott Fleming pulled a goal back for Biddestone when he headed home an Ed Jones corner, before a double from Bell top scorer Craig Townsend gave his team a 4-1 half time lead which should have been enough to see them inflict the leaders with their first defeat of the season. However Biddestone have proved a hard to beat this term and they showed that they are a class act and merit their place in pole position as they clawed their way back into the game, firstly Tamlyn Goodrich converted a Ben Morris cross to reduce the arrears to two goals and then Paul Clifford turned home Andrew Davis pinpoint delivery to narrow the gap to one goal. Biddestone's fight back was complete when Ed Jones delivered another telling cross for Scott Fleming who squared things up at 4-4. Bell regained the lead thanks to Craig Townsend who completed his hat trick, but once again Biddestone hit back to restore parity and this time they went route one when a huge punt up field from keeper Pete Dennett was met by Tamlyn Goodrich who lashed home his second of the game a his teams fifth. With time running out it was likely to be the next goal scored would win the game and this proved to be so and it was Biddestone who scored it as they took the lead for the first time in the game contest thanks to Scott Fleming whose strike from 25 yards rocketed home to earn Biddestone a 6-5 triumph which enabled them to open up a three point lead over the rest of the chasing pack. read more
DIVISION TWO Cooper Avon are the new pacesetters of Division Two after their 6-0 victory over Audley FC coupled with previous leaders Crown Cosmos shock 3-1 home lose against The Crown Devizes saw the two teams swap positions at the head of the table. Cooper scored three goals in each half against an Audley side who had to once again to use a patched up Chris Shipway who limped out of the match before the final whistle and manager Steve Mallard had to take over the goal keeping duties and might have played his last game after chipping a bone in his fibula. Mallard played well as a make shift keeper but couldn't prevent, James Ponsford, Tom Robinson and Simeon Mills from giving the tryemen a 3-0 half time lead. Second half goals from Josh Robinson, Simeon Mills and Jason Roach who scored from the penalty spot to make up the half dozen. read more
DIVISION ONE Trowbridge based Ship FC opened up a four-point lead at the top of the Division One after they defeated Kingfisher FC and Potterne suffered a surprise loss away at North Bradley. The Ship's first half display against their guests Kingfisher at the Stallards playing field was very disjointed to say the least as many players seemed to be preparing for the forthcoming Pantomime season. Lee Hayward's side found themselves 2-1 down at the brake but got their act together in the second 45 minutes to run out 5-3 winners over a hard tackling Kingfisher side. An evenly matched first half saw Dave Percival, Lee Hayward and Tom Bonsor all miss easy chances for the Ship and they fell behind when comical defending from Adam Glover was punished by Ben Thomas who pounced to put Fisher in front on 38 minutes. Kingfisher had the chance to double their advantage and only a great save from Lewis Porter, who was at full stretch to deny Tom Highmore kept the score at 1-0. On 43 minutes the Ship were back on level term when Glover atoned for his earlier mishap when he bundled the ball home despite the best efforts of Kingfisher's keeper Mark Bolton who was unable to keep the ball out despite getting his had to Glover's shot. In first half injury time Kingfisher regained the lead when a clumsy challenge on Luke Stoneham by Scott Cunningham resulted in a penalty being awarded which was duly dispatched by Nick Still to give the visitors to Trowbridge a 2-1 lead. The Ship were a better team in the second period and squared things up when Dave Percival tapped the ball home after his brother Shaun's initial shot came back of the woodwork. Danny Amorouso's delicate chip over keeper Bolton gave the Ship the lead for the first time in the game and when Lee Hayward headed home a Scott Cunningham cross the points were as could as theirs. Kingfisher hit back with Ben Thomas scoring his second of the game to cut the gap to the odd goal ,but a second of the contest from Dave Percival restored the Ship's two goal advantage which they maintained until the final whistle. read more
