  ON behalf of the Rotary Club of Chippenham Wiltshire Vale I thank everyone who contributed to our annual Christmas Children's Charities appeal and in particular thank Sainsbury's Chippenham for allowing us to take over their entrance lobby for five days. read more

• Derisible thinking

  WHILE I deplore the waste of council tax payers' money, not to mention the loss of so many parking spaces by moving bus shelters in Wootton Bassett so soon after installation (Gazette December 8), I do find Coun Thomas' comments regarding "joined up thinking" derisible. read more

• Size does matter

  IN paragraph seven of the article about the revamp of the Somerfield store at Malmesbury in last week's Gazette readers are told it was undertaken to enable the company to be able to "offer everything that customers want without the hassle of large customers'' I am left wondering where large customers are supposed to shop for their groceries and what Somerfield's definition is for such an individual? read more

• Light fantastic

  ONCE again I should like to thank all the members of Calne Town Council for all the great work that they have done in lighting up the town centre in such a fantastic way. I wish them all a very happy Christmas. read more

• Madness in the park

  I WONDER whose crazy idea it was to remove virtually all the shrubs from borders in John Coles Park. The Park Lane entrances to the park, which used to give all year round interest, are now either grassed over or barren soil. read more

• Poppy Day success

  MAY I thank the people of Devizes and District for their magnificent support in this year's Poppy Appeal. I will not have the final figure for another five months, but already we have banked £11,500. read more

• Thanks for support

  THE crew from Devizes Fire Station would like to thank all those people that contributed towards our recent collection in the Brittox, to which a total of £1,470 was raised for the Fire Services National Benevolent Fund. read more

• We were naughty too

  LEST the litany of his generation's good behaviour by J Peel last week ("We were different") should give the impression we were altogether too good, may I put the following on record. read more

• Chairman’s right

  IN response to NH Holland's letter last week regarding St John's School in Marlborough's development proposals, it is astonishing he should question the committee chairman's casting vote. read more

• Wonderful pupils

  AS we hear so much bad news about today's youngsters, I though you might like to hear a little of the good. read more

• Blame the badgers

  I READ with some surprise in your paper last week that scientists cannot explain the decline in the population of breeding curlews in north Wiltshire. Let me enlighten them. read more

• System is flawed

  ALTHOUGH I think it is dreadful that so many people miss appointments at the doctors' surgeries in Devizes (Gazette, December 8), I can't help thinking that, before striking patients off their lists, they give a thought to the system in general. read more

• Calne needs a proper service
