John Toomer Garden and Pet Centre in Stone Lane, Lydiard Millicent, was a finalist in the national Garden Centre and Retail Awards.

The garden centre had been nominated for its pet department, which was recognised for its helpful staff, excellent advice and wide range of products.

Manager Nigel Davies said: "We have no idea who nominated us for the award, but when the paperwork turned up we couldn't believe it.

"We are asked to back up the nomination with an essay, which we sent off and in November I had to go along to a ceremony.

"It was our chance to shine and we took on some really big names in the pet business.

"We didn't take the top award but we did extremely well to get to where we did and I am immensely proud of the team that we have here."

The winners were announced at a gala black-tie dinner held at The Royal Lancaster Hotel, Lancaster Gate, London, on November 23.

The Pet Department Of The Year category in the awards goes to those retailers who are able to encourage and inspire pet ownership as a privilege not as a right.

Firms also need to promote welfare of livestock within the outlet and at home. They must also provide excellent customer service and advice.
