Plans revealed for £1.5m centre

AMBITIOUS plans to create a new sports complex in Warminster have been unveiled. A trio of private businessmen have spent two years developing the scheme, which could see a £1.5m centre covering 2,000 sq m built on the sports ground at Folly Lane, home of Warminster Rugby Club.

The emphasis at the multi-sports facility, which would include a U-shaped group of four squash courts, would be to involve young people in sport.

The aim is to work closely with the specialist sports college at Kingdown School.

"We want to put the focus on junior sports development, creating somewhere to provide quality family time," said Chippenham businessman John Brennan, one of the trio of entrepreneurs, who has been working with the rugby club on the plans. The original idea at Folly Lane was that the rugby club would build a club house, but they have not been able to do that.

"There are two rugby pitches, a cricket square and a football pitch but no facilities. It is a beautiful place, it would make a lovely place to have events."

Plans for the private sports centre have been lodged with West Wiltshire District Council, and will be considered by councillors.
