Karen's day is coming!

Karen Day who will be having her head shaved Ref: 99995-42WHEN Dave Howells decided to do a daredevil stunt in aid of the Prospect Hospice, his wife Karen Day did not want to be outdone.

But rather than doing a hair-raising wingwalk on a plane, as he plans to do, she decided to lose all her hair instead.

As previously reported in the Adver, Dave, 52, landlord of the Boundary House pub in Moredon, is taking to the skies to raise money for the charity which looked after his mum before she died of cancer earlier this year.

Now Karen, 43, who works for Aramark, which provides the catering for Nationwide in Pipers Way, is doing her bit.

She said: "When Dave's mum was ill, her hair went very brittle and every time she combed it a bit more of her hair fell out.

"It was a real concern for her while she was ill. It really upset her.

"So I thought, I'm the lucky one, it's my choice, I've always had long hair and I could do it to raise some money.

"You see youngsters who have cancer and they lose their hair and I just wanted to do something to help a good cause."

And the cash has already been pouring in, thanks to the generosity of the regulars at the pub and of Karen's colleagues.

She said: "I wanted to raise £1,000 but I think I've already topped that.

"Nationwide have been great. They have all sponsored me. I don't think there's many I haven't managed to get to give money.

"And they have had a bucket in the shop that people have been putting their change in.

"And we already knew the regulars at the pub were a generous lot."

Dave's mother, Eileen Howells, from Park North, was 78 when she died in July. And while it was her death that sparked the fundraising, Karen herself was touched by the prospect of cancer earlier this year.

She said: "I had a lump removed in January. Fortunately it was benign, but it scared me to death.

"I just thought that because Dave was doing some fundraising, I would do something. I didn't fancy going up on a plane so this was something I could do."

Karen will come face to face with the clippers at 2pm at the Boundary House pub on Saturday, November 5.
