Ploughing match brings charity cash

Jessica Beagley, seven, tries her hand at ploughing with Shire horses Duke and Emily (17766/2)PLOUGHMEN from Wiltshire went head-to-head with competitors from Dorset and Somerset on Sunday in the Wylye Valley Ploughing Match.

Thirty-eight vintage and classic tractors featured at the second annual event, which raised £300 for the Wylye Valley Disabled Children's Riding Fund.

The match was divided into three categories, trailer ploughs, mounted two-furrow and mounted three-furrow or more, with Nigel Anstee, Keith Stone and David Dennis taking top spot in each category.

Two Shire horse teams also entered this year and they demonstrated the art of turning the soil the old-fashioned way. Match secretary Danny Howell said: "It was a very enjoyable day. Thanks to the support of the ploughmen and the generosity of our sponsors and spectators the match raised £300 for a very worthy charity immediately on our doorstep."
