Cash for crier

MALMESBURY is considering paying its town crier £100 a year in a bid to persuade people to take on the job. The town council is thinking about giving a cash sum as part of the job's benefits package.

No-one has carried out the ceremonial role since Rose Darlington resigned in July.

Deputy town clerk Phil Rice said: "It is not an onerous position. The crier is expected to work a few times a year mostly at civic events."
