Car crashes into front garden

The car that crashed into a gardenBROKENBOROUGH villagers claim a bend on the Malmesbury to Tetbury road where a woman crashed her car last week is a potential death trap.

The woman was travelling north from Malmesbury towards Tetbury last Thursday, around 8.40am, when her Citroen Saxo left the road and smashed through a fence.

The car ended up in the garden of a house owned by parish councillor Linda Griffiths.

The woman, who is believed to be from the Malmesbury area, and in her early 20s, was taken to Great Western Hospital in Swindon with serious injuries.

Before the emergency services arrived there was a second accident when two cars collided. No-one was hurt.

Coun Griffiths said there had been many accidents on this stretch of road. She was instrumental in getting warning signs put up before the right-hand bend about two years ago.

Retired road worker Desmond Hatton, 75, who lives opposite the bend said: "I have lived here since 1976 and one day there were four accidents in one day. Down on the bend there is an accident about once a fortnight. The cars go too fast and the road is a death trap."

Brokenborough parish clerk Hazel Jarrett said councillors have been trying to get the county council to erect speed signs on the road for years.

Mrs Jarrett said: "This is not the first time Mrs Griffiths has had a car in her garden. We have asked the county council for years for a speed limit until we are blue in the face."

Anyone with information on the accident should call police on (01666) 822222.
