Roadworks to delay carnival

MAJOR roadworks in Wootton Bassett High Street will mean a change of date for next year's carnival. Carnival chairman Diana Williams said the carnival will have to be delayed to allow Wessex Water to complete major works.

She said: "Unfortunately there's no other option but to move the carnival since it's just not possible to hold it at the normal time.

"The work Wessex Water is doing has to be done and the two things can't take place at the same time."

Traditionally the town's carnival is held towards the end of May each year. However, Wessex Water is due to start five months of major works on the town's sewers in January.

The work will involve digging up the northern end of the High Street, the introduction of a one-way system and temporary road closures.

Mrs Williams said: "We're not saying that the date will be different every year but next year there's no way around it. The carnival will still definitely take place and all the groups who have been involved in previous years have said they're OK with the change of date."

The new carnival team will meet on November 1 to discuss possible dates for next year's event.
