PEWSEY Vale are still searching for their first away win of the season after coming up short against Heddington Amateurs on Saturday.
Vale put in a battling performance but were cruelly defeated by a sublime chip from Craig Gilboy with the last meaningful kick of the game.
Vale boss Dave Turner said: "I am absolutely gutted. It will take a long time to get over this one.
"I have been in a lot of changing rooms in my time and I have never been in one like it.
"All the players were so disappointed. There was nothing to say.
"In a way that is a good thing as it shows they care. That seems to be stronger this season."
The first half was a dour encounter with chances at a premium and both defences on top form although Amateurs should have taken the lead on 40 minutes when James Murray's pinpoint cross found Tom Baldwin on the six yards out but his snap shot was well saved by the Vale's Stuart Thompson.
After the restart it was Vale who threatened when Mark Bennett was allowed a free header, although he missed.
Headington were starting to exert pressure on Vale and on the hour substitute Matthew Crook hit a scorcher from the edge of the box which was well saved by Thompson.
Vale were unlucky not to snatch a goal during the final minutes when Kevin Montague was denied by the home goalkeeper tipping his shot over.
With seconds left Gilboy was not picked-up on the right-wing and cut inside floating the ball over Thompson.
Turner's side now face Purton in the GLS Hellenic League Cup although the manager would prefer a league game.
"We seem to be having more cup games than league games at the moment and we are falling behind in the league because of it," he said.
"It is good because we have had two good wins and that builds confidence but I would rather have the six points.
"It can be a good distraction if they are spaced out but at the moment they just take our focus off the league."
