Goal threat

HAMEUR Bouazza has his sights firmly set on shooting Town to League One safety after opening his goalscoring account while manager Iffy Onuora has warned against anyone at the club indulging in complacency on the back of two good results.

The young French forward netted his first goal since his temporary switch from Watford in last night's 2-0 win over Stevenage Borough in the first round of the LDV Vans Trophy.

It followed an early header from Rory Fallon but it was Bouazza who got the nod in the man of the match stakes and picked up the sponsors' champagne.

He hopes it doesn't prove to be a one-off honour.

He said: "To get the man of the match makes me very happy.

"I have a cup goal and now I just want to score more goals to help keep the club up. The manager wants me to get at teams and that's what I will try to do.

"Hopefully I can get more goals and as I get more games then I will become even more confident. I want to play my part."

As for the man who brought him to the County Ground, he was just as pleased to see the youngster on the scoresheet.

Boss Onuora said: "I'm delighted for Hameur. He's worked hard. Hopefully this will have given him a real fillip and he can go on from here.

"It should have given him a load of confidence.

"He's looking sharp, bright and better with every game.

"The first thing you look to get right is things defensively and if you do get pushed back at times then it's important to have that pace and an outlet in attack when you break.

"That's why it was so important to bring in someone like that (Bouazza)."

Onuora saw plenty of positives in last night's victory and while confident that Town are now working towards banishing the memory of an eight-match losing streak, he insists the hard work is really only just beginning.

He said: "If you stand still and rest on your laurels you normally get a smack in the face.

"Let's not pull any punches we're still a little bit adrift at the bottom.''
