£5m push starts for auditorium

THE fundraising has begun in earnest to build a theatre/cinema in Marlborough.

Kennet Valley Arts Trust (KVAT) needs to raise more than £5 million to see the new venue, called the Riverbank, built.

The planned theatre's catchment area is hoping to include theatre and arts lovers in Swindon.

Last week the theatre got the backing of Kennet District Council which gave it full planning permission.

Now, KVAT is hoping to get as much support as possible for its fundraising events.

On Tuesday, November 1, the trust will be screening two films at the Bradleian Theatre in Marlborough.

These are My House In Umbria starring Maggie Smith and Ronnie Barker at 6pm and Sideways, starring Paul Giamatti at 8.15pm.

Tickets are £6 for each film and are available from the White Horse Book Shop on Marlborough High Street.

The theatre, which will include a cinema, will be built on an attractive site in the centre of Marlborough in the George Lane car park.

The building, predominantly in oak, will occupy an area adjacent to the River Kennet and the Watermeadows.

The spacious two-storey foyer will have a bar area, which can be used for exhibitions, entertainment, art displays and social events.

The main auditorium with retractable seating will accommodate 300.
