Vegetables are not for me, says Krystal

Krystal Styles says she hates vegetables Ref: 99692-22NATIONAL SCHOOL MEALS WEEK: Some children will refuse to eat vegetables regardless of what is on the menu.

Krystal Styles, seven, lives in Whitbourne Avenue, Park South and goes to Brookfield Primary School. She hates vegetables and will not eat them.

"My mum used to say I had to try vegetables but I won't. I hate them," she said.

"Sometimes my mum puts them on my plate but I just say I can't eat it.

"I have tried broccoli before. It was OK. It looks like a tree.

"The worst thing is bananas. If I smell them I feel sick."

Krystal's mum, Nicki, 31, says she has given up trying to force her daughter to eat healthily.

"I've tried everything with Krystal but nothing works," she said.

Nicki has two sons, Bradley, eight, who likes fruit and vegetables and Brandon, five, who has to eat a special diet because of a medical condition.

"I've done all sorts of little things to try to get her to try food but she won't.

"When I cook things like spaghetti bolognese I grate carrot up in it so she can't see it.

"At least that way I feel she's had something.

"At school they get these packed lunches from the council for free because I'm a single mum.

"But half of it comes back because she doesn't like it.

"Every day I chuck out the yoghurt because it's got fruit pieces in and a throw a celery stick or carrot into the bin.

"The problem then is that I have to give extra food, like little treats that she does like, to take to school to fill her up."

Ms Styles added: "Because she doesn't eat fruit and vegetables I make sure she has a multi-vitamin every day."
