Flu jabs 'a must' for pensioners

HEALTH advisors are urging people over 65 to have a flu vaccination before winter sets in. This year's campaign, 'If you knew about the flu you'd get the jab' aims to prevent apathy, which saw three out of 10 over 65s shun the jab last year.

Ann Shelley, director of public health for Kennet & North Wiltshire and West Wiltshire PCTs said people could die if they do not protect themselves against the virus.

She said: "For those most at risk, flu can lead to more serious illnesses, including bronchitis or pneumonia and could result in hospitalisation or, in the most serious cases, death.

"Those at risk from the effects of flu need to get a flu jab every year."

Thousands of deaths every year are linked to flu, with free vaccinations available to over 65s or sufferers of illnesses like asthma, diabetes or serious heart or kidney conditions.

Chief medical officer and chief nursing officer Christine Beasley has urged NHS staff to lead by example.

Vaccinations last for 12 months.

Around 10 to 15 per cent of the population develop flu every year.
