Bennett's in nick of time for Bassett

FA VASE: Matty Bennett's 90th-minute strike earned nine-man Wootton Bassett Town an FA Vase second qualifying round replay at Wessex League side Christchurch tomorrow night (7.45pm).

The epic 1-1 draw produced two red cards one for each side, a missed penalty and an injury that resulted in Bassett keeper John Haines being taken to hospital.

Bassett were behind with only 10 minutes gone when Dave Roberts headed in at the far post after the defence failed to clear from a Lewis Till cross.

Christchurch captain Chris Swan was sent off on 29 minutes for elbowing Richard Gee before a great save from Haines denied Roberts a second 10 minutes before half time.

Christchurch were awarded a penalty in the 54th minute as Steve Yeardley brought down Billy Puckett in the box Puckett missed though.

Bassett were reduced to 10 men before the penalty as Dwayne Quinn was dismissed for swearing.

With 10 minutes left, disaster struck for the home side as Haines went down clutching his knee after trying to recover a parried effort.

Bassett stepped their game up following this and with seconds remaining a rasping 20-yard volley from Bennett nestled into the bottom corner to force extra time.

A valiant defensive effort from Bassett, as well as some luck, kept Christchurch out with Tom Hughes hitting the bar from 10 yards out the only real chance in the extra 30 minutes.

Malmesbury gave a good account of themselves before going out to Hellenic Premier side Slimbridge.

A goal in each half from Will Morford was enough for the visitors but the Vics can be proud of the way they competed against a side near the top of the league above them.

Fairford are also out, after a 2-1 extra time home defeat to Radstock Town.

Melksham were dumped out of the competition, shocked 4-1 by Chard, who play a division below them in Toolstation Western League Division One.

Nick Mooney ensured Devizes progressed into the next round, thumping home a free-kick to defeated underdogs Penzance.
