Roadside signs given all-clear

CONCERNS over roadside hoardings along the A36 have proved unfounded, say council officers.

Enforcement officers from West Wiltshire District Council checked the length of the A36 after a report by the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) said the road was a "hoardings hotspot".

The CPRE claimed to have identified 18 hoardings along the 40-mile road, which runs through west Wiltshire.

But following a detailed roadside check, council officers found that, while there were some signs pointing out local facilities and sales boards for land, there was no "inappropriate signage."

Development control manager Dave Hubbard said: "These findings are very pleasing. We will continue to be vigilant and we will enforce the planning regulations controlling advertisements adjacent to roads."

Cllr Jeff Osborn, planning and economic development portfolio holder, said: "It is important that we look after the route of the A36, as it passes through Cranborne Chase and West Wiltshire Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, as well as other areas of attractive countryside."
