Tributes made to former PM

Tributes were paid to the lives and work of former Prime Minister Lord Callaghan and his wife Audrey during a thanksgiving service yesterday.

The event attracted hundreds of people to Llandaff Cathedral in Cardiff.

Prayers were led by members of the Non-Conformist community in which the couple were brought up, and of the Jewish, Muslim and Roman Catholic communities.

Lord Callaghan died peacefully at his East Sussex home in March this year on the eve of his 93rd birthday. His death came just 11 days after that of his wife of 67 years.

He was the longest-living former Prime Minister.

and the only politician to have held all four major offices of state: Prime Minister, Chancellor of the Exchequer, Foreign Secretary and Home Secretary.
