Full speed ahead for convention

what a handful Neil Booth with his rail signs. Ref: 99303-51aTHE finishing touches have been put to this year's Swindon Railway Convention.

The two-day event, which opened today will pay tribute to the town's railway heritage. There are a wide range of displays which organisers are confident will bring the crowds flocking.

Among them are a working steam engine and the first ever display of all the station nameplates seen on the London to Cornwall line. The Paddington to Penzance Totem Experience has been organised by Neil Booth, who runs Railway Nameplates UK.

But he is still missing five signs from the Swindon area and is appealing for anyone who might have them in their attic to come forward.

The missing nameplates are for Reading West, Theale, Hungerford, Castle Cary and Corsham.

Mr Booth said: "Everyone is welcome to attend. And if anyone has any items that they wish to bring along I will be providing a free valuation service."

Mr Booth would also be interested in speaking with anyone who would be interested in taking part in an auction of railway memorabilia to be held in the Wiltshire area in the near future.

Pete Waterman, of Pop Idol and 80s hit factory Stock, Aitken and Waterman fame, will also be appearing at the convention.

The train enthusiast will be displaying his locomotives and chatting with visitors.

Visitors will have the chance to take a ride on the classic Hawksworth pannier tank engine, as well as marvel at the King George IV steam engine that will be on display at the museum.

There will also be a number of demonstrations, displays and special interest talks.

Admission to the convention costs £6.60 for adults, £4.20 for children and £4.30 for senior citizens.

Mr Booth can be contacted on 07836225711.
